A winter walk on the Stefanitag ended for two men at the Reintalersee in Tyrol with the dramatic death of their bulldog. The animal had broken through the ice and – despite a large-scale operation – could no longer be saved, because the aid workers had also been warned of a person in distress.
The dog, a French bulldog according to police, ran onto the partially frozen lake at an unnoticed moment around 11:30 am. However, the thickness of the ice was only a few centimeters, the dog broke through and ended up under the ice.
“This is the Most Dangerous Time”
When the two men tried to save the animal, at least one person fell into the water, also in the shallower bank area. Meanwhile, the FF Kramsach with four vehicles, the FF Schwaz with three, the police from Kundl and Kramsach, as well as ambulance, emergency doctor and water rescue arrived at the scene of the accident. Divers recovered the lifeless dog using an “icebreaker”. The animal died at the scene of the accident. Operations manager Michael Ausserhofer warns against entering ice surfaces: “This is the most dangerous time!”
