This is what Pharaoh Ramses II could have looked like

Date:

Using a 3D model of the skull of the mummy of the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses II, scientists from Egypt and Great Britain have now reconstructed the face of the mighty king. Using state-of-the-art technology, they were able to create images that show what Ramses II, considered one of the most important rulers of ancient Egypt, looked like at the ages of 45 and 90.

“When we first look at a skull, we look for the most visible characteristic details first,” says Caroline Wilkinson of the FaceLab team at Liverpool John Moores University. “Ramses II, for example, has a very wide nasal bone. It is very high between the eyes and quite pronounced.

Through painstaking work, including the use of software used in forensic science for facial reconstructions, the FaceLab team determined the position of the pharaoh’s facial muscles. “The more firmly a muscle is anchored to bone, the more its attachments leave visible marks on the skull surface,” explains Wilkinson on the Liverpool John Moores University website.

Died over 3400 years ago
The researchers spent three months reconstructing the pharaoh’s face, which shows him between the ages of 45 and 90 (photo below). And now we could show what the legendary ruler, who died a little over 3400 years ago, looked like.

Ramses II, also known as Ramses the Great, was born in 1303 BC and died in 1213 BC. He was the third ancient Egyptian king (pharaoh) of the 19th dynasty of the so-called New Kingdom and reigned for about 66 years, from 1279 to 1213 BC. This makes him one of the longest-serving heads of state in the world.

During his reign, Egypt experienced an economic and cultural prosperity not achieved under any pharaoh since him. Through his diplomatic actions, he managed to keep peace with his neighboring peoples for almost fifty years.
