Accident drama in Vienna – BMW driven over sidewalk: pedestrian (47) dead

Date:

Shocking traffic accident Tuesday evening in Vienna-Ottakring: A 25-year-old was driving a car that was not allowed to be used on the new construction belt. According to police, he lost control at an intersection, went off the road and landed on the sidewalk. A passerby was caught – for the 47-year-old, all help came too late.

Observant witnesses who observed the accident at the intersection with Koppstrasse around midnight alerted the police. The emergency services then immediately carried out the rescue measures. Because the presumably “cut down” BMW was heavily damaged, fire protection was also installed as a preventive measure. Due to the influx of spectators, a privacy screen was also necessary.

According to witness statements, the young man drove too fast and wanted to change lanes, after which the back of his “bolide” broke up. He slammed into a light pole and then into a house wall, the passerby got between them and didn’t stand a chance.

47-year-old still resuscitated
After receiving emergency medical care and resuscitating at the scene, the 47-year-old was taken to hospital, where he succumbed to his serious injuries. Both the 25-year-old suspected accident driver and his two passengers were injured, but it should remain with abrasions, the emergency services later said.

The 25-year-old was found to have a blood alcohol level of just over 0.5 and his vehicle had a test drive number plate.

18 emergency services from the Viennese fire brigade were deployed with four vehicles. The police and fire brigade had supported the professional rescue service with CPR.

Dangerous street races in Vienna
It is unclear whether the fatal accident was related to an illegal car race. So-called roadrunners in the federal capital make headlines again and again.

“We know the problem of illegal street races and road runners. Tightening up is urgently needed to be able to deal with the problem more decisively. In extreme cases, we also want to make it possible to seize vehicles,” Councilor Ulli Sima (SPÖ) said in April this year in a statement to the “Krone”.

Years ago, Transport Minister Leonore Gewessler (Greens) announced that cars belonging to “extreme speed demons” could be seized and auctioned in the future. “Extreme frenzy is life-threatening for all other people on the street,” the minister renewed her position at the beginning of December 2022. The change – more details here – is currently under investigation.
