Pavel Antov, known as “the king of sausages” stayed with three friends in a luxurious hotel to celebrate his 66th birthday
Pavel Antov, the Russian oligarch known as “the king of sausages” for his meat export business, has died at a hotel in India after falling from a third-floor window. The businessman stayed at the luxurious Sai International hotel in Rayagada, Odisha state, to celebrate his birthday with three friends. He had just turned 66 and, according to initial police hypotheses, his death could have been a suicide after he found the body of one of the people who had accompanied him on the anniversary trip in his room a few days ago. This is Vladimir Bogdanov, an oil executive who authorities say died of a heart attack and whose body was found surrounded by empty wine bottles.
Investigators say that Antov, married with a daughter, has been in a deep depression ever since. His body lay at the foot of the window, in the middle of a pool of blood. Russian media reported on Tuesday that Indian police “do not rule out that Pavel Antov may have become depressed by the death of his friend and committed suicide”.
The death has raised much suspicion in the international community due to the succession of oligarchs critical of President Vladimir Putin who have died in accidents or suicides in recent months. Although Antov was considered a politician related to the head of the Kremlin and belonged to his party, United Russia, he denounced the bombing of the people of Ukraine on WhatsApp a few months ago. He then backed down, stating that someone else had published it and that it was a “technical error” as he was “a staunch supporter of my country’s president and patriot” who shared “the objectives” of the invasion. The meat oligarch held a senior position in the Putin government, chaired the Agriculture Committee and was the highest-earning deputy in parliament.
