The Austrian police are intensively preparing for the upcoming New Year’s Eve. Due to the riots of recent years, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner (ÖVP) has ordered the directors of the state police to take measures. Nationally, 1000 additional police officers are deployed.
“Anyone who does not follow the basic rules of peaceful coexistence should expect the consequences,” Karner said. According to a broadcast, the measures must be adapted to the needs and circumstances of the respective federal states and their capitals.
Drones are also used
Members of the task force, standby units, rapid intervention groups, assistance dog patrols and civil servants will be deployed more frequently in all nine parts of the country. Drones will also be used for reconnaissance. The National Police Stations and the State Bureaus for the Protection of the Constitution must also keep an eye on social media and other places on the internet.
The deployment experiences of recent years, but also the knowledge of the Linz Halloween Night, were incorporated into the operational concepts for New Year’s Eve. New Year’s Eve, with its accidents due to alcohol and fireworks, as well as fights and riots in public spaces, is a challenge for the emergency services every year, but this time they want to be particularly well prepared for riots.
