Bicycle couriers who deliver food and groceries for the mjam delivery service often have to deal with unfavorable working conditions, reports the “Ö1-Mittagsjournal”. The couriers are often on duty for ten hours a day, up to seven days a week. The ORF refers to a driver who earns 50 to 60 euros per day, so five to six euros per hour.
The collective labor agreement for bicycle couriers is currently 9.21 euros gross per hour. Mjam points out that the company’s own drivers earn an average hourly wage of twelve euros. Further improvements are planned for next year.
The bicycle courier mentioned by the Morgenjournaal received 1,060 euros for 212 deliveries in June. However, he still has to pay social security because he is an independent driver.
Long distances, little income
As reported in the radio show, the bike courier rides in mjam’s clothes, but works for Cheetah Logistics. There, in turn, reference is made to the fact that delivery areas have been taken over from mjam.
Mjam, on the other hand, is said to have no contract with Cheetah Logistics. This indicates that Cheetah Logistics is a subcontractor who received the order from another company, according to the Ö1 article. Particularly in the districts of Vienna, Floridsdorf and Donaustadt, independent couriers are deployed via subcontractors. The couriers would have to travel long distances and would therefore earn little.
