Curious step in Lower Austria – uncertain snow conditions: summer toboggan run open!

Date:

Many winter sports regions are currently concerned about the high temperatures that are predicted around the turn of the year. In St. Corona in Lower Austria, people simply adapt to the climatic conditions and quickly open the summer toboggan run again …

The slope of the Wexl Arena family ski area in St. Corona, Lower Austria, is currently still OK. However, the condition should be checked daily. Short-term restrictions or closing of the slopes may become necessary, it was emphasized in view of the approaching temperature rise.

“Most flexible ski area”
That’s why the Wexl Arena is taking a rather unusual approach on New Year’s Eve: the summer toboggan run will just reopen there, as announced on Thursday. This alternative program should be available until January 8, 2023. Jochen Danninger (ÖVP), County Councilor for Tourism, described the region as “Austria’s most flexible ski area”.

Precarious snow conditions in many places
In many other winter sports regions, operators are also currently shaking from acute melting snow. The situation is precarious in many ski resorts in Salzburg. In Werfenweng the lifts are open, but only six of the 17 slopes are accessible to skiers. Zinkenlifte, Karkogel, Postalm and Heutal-Unken have had to close again. Or not unlocked at all.

The situation is similar in Vorarlberg. As photos from Wednesday show, you often only slide into the valley on narrow snowy routes. The green is beautiful left and right of the slopes.

Accidents have also happened, such as in Tyrol: two young people (17) died there on Wednesday morning. They raced to the edge of the piste, fell onto the mostly snow-free ground, then fell about 200 feet over steep mountainous terrain sprinkled with rocks.
