Myanmar’s deposed Prime Minister Aung San Suu Kyi, 77, was again sentenced to several years in prison on Friday. According to legal circles, a court found her guilty of five charges in a corruption trial alone. Suu Kyi, who was sentenced to 26 years in prison in previous trials, now faces another seven years behind bars.
The process involved loaning a government helicopter to a minister. Suu Kyi is accused of not following rules and causing “damage to the state”. Each of these offenses carries a penalty of up to 15 years.
Suu Kyi denies all allegations
The military overthrew the elected government of Suu Kyi in Myanmar in February 2021 and took power. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has since pleaded guilty to 14 charges ranging from corruption to illegally importing walkie-talkies to violating the Official Secrets Act. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has denied all allegations as politically motivated.
