Or fish die – Estimated: 25 to 50% of the stock has died

Date:

According to estimates by the German Institute for Inland Fisheries, 25 to 50 percent of the fish died as a result of the environmental disaster in the Oder. That is about 200 to 400 tons, said the scientific director of the institute, Uwe Brämick, in the environmental committee on Tuesday.

“When fish die, you don’t find every dead fish. We have to assume that two to four times as many fish died as were salvaged and discarded,” Brämick reported. According to him, there are about 50 species in the Oder, 14 of which have been found after sampling and in all sizes.

Brämick described the losses from fishing on the Oder as drastic. “We assume it will take two to four years for the stocks’ potential to return to the way it was before this development.”

According to him, about 50 to 60 tons of fish are normally caught in the Oder by the twelve fishing companies, who earn 80 percent of their income from this. Fishermen take the same number of tons out of the river every year.

Call for longer-term monitoring
Brämick spoke out in favor of longer-term monitoring of the use of fish stocks. In this way, the consequences of such events can be better estimated and evaluated.
