A difficult year is coming to an end and 2023 will undoubtedly be a challenging year. Krone readers therefore have clear wishes for politicians.
City politicians take note, the people speak on this double page. We asked our readers: What are your demands on politicians? Hundreds of emails, letters and phone calls have come in with a wide variety of concerns, fears, wishes and solutions. From the crisis-ravaged public transport to the overcrowded ambulances, from the problems on the road to the long-running safety issue. What good is the umpteenth study that Vienna is the safest city in the galaxy if many elderly people in particular no longer dare to go out at night?
Viennese concerns
In addition, there is the fear of the next rent. Do I go shopping, do I heat or do I pay the interest? More and more Viennese are confronted with such questions. Representatives were elected to represent the people. So listen carefully.
Security: “more police presence”
Many “Krone” readers are concerned about protection against acts of violence. The large number of knife attacks in particular worries people. Peter S. wishes: “More police presence. There are hardly any police on the street anymore. Zones of 30, for example, are hardly checked.” Kurt T. reports: “More police are urgently needed – especially with favorites. I myself once had to take a taxi on the way home.” Many readers advocate mandatory values and information campaigns.
Public transport: “Extend!”
Mrs. M. is an elderly reader of “Krone” and feels “trapped” in her neighborhood. One of the reasons: “It is difficult to get to the children or attend events by public transport.” That’s why she stays close to her. Rudolf S. reports long waiting times for the tram, as the Wiener Linien suffers from a blatant shortage of staff: “Waiting time of 14 minutes for line 46, which was overcrowded at the time.” The urgent call: “Expand and intensify public transport”, so Karl B
Asylum: “Yes, but”
The Viennese are concerned with the subject of asylum and immigration. In principle, they are not negative towards the refugees. But there are concerns about social benefits. Bernhard M. therefore demands: “Refugees, yes, but not benefits, but benefits in kind.” Helmut K. says: “More diversity is needed. In parts of the 20th district and in schools, you hardly hear a word of German anymore.” What did not go down well at all was the SPÖ’s aim to facilitate access to citizenship.
Housing: ‘Not always just a rent increase’
“Finally create affordable housing and not always just raise the rent,” writes reader Peter K. Another Viennese woman: “It can’t be that a person has to think about heating, shopping or paying his rent.” , this order of the Viennese should not be understood as indiscriminately concrete Vienna. Sabine H. writes to us: “Trees must in any case be preserved in the outlying area.” Therefore: Vienna must do something about the vacancy.
Traffic: ‘SUVs are prohibited’
When it comes to traffic, opinions differ. While some advocate for more 30 km/h zones, others would prefer to get rid of them and back to 50 km/h. Both sides believe this will reduce traffic and improve traffic flow. Giorgio M. demands: “More traffic lights flash in the night.” Karl B. has concrete measures in mind: “Car traffic must be limited quickly. SUVs should be banned from driving in the city and the production of electric SUVs should be stopped in any case.”
Parking: “A sticker for all of Vienna”
After the most recent sticker expansion, the Viennese are still working on the subject of parking stickers. Petra W.: “I would be happy if everyone could choose a second sticker in their own neighbourhood.” Fritz T. has a problem with trucks: “The rangers should come to Simmeringer Hauptstraße more often. Trucks are blocking important places here.” Another reader says: “There should be a parking sticker for the whole of Vienna. In addition, supervision must be urgently expanded.”
Health: “End of long waiting times”
Reader Richard P. demands an end to waiting times in the outpatient clinics with “peak values of up to six hours”. Norbert W. is also “deeply concerned” about the current state of the healthcare system: “Hospitals are struggling with capacity problems, even among general practitioners and specialists, the Viennese asks: “Where is the spirit of Hippocrates?”
