Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen received Christmas carol groups from six Austrian states in Vienna’s Hofburg on Friday. The children and young people dressed as king wished the head of state, accompanied by his wife Doris Schmidauer, blessings and “peaceful coexistence, solidarity and tolerance” for the whole country and beyond.
The Federal President had great respect for the efforts of the 85,000 children across Austria dressed as Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar, who went from door to door in all states in the remaining vacation days until January 8 and chanted in support of the Epiphany relief projects campaign in poor regions of the world.
The corona pandemic has also not deterred those involved in the past two years and they have found new ways to reach people through hygiene measures and online offers. “The money you raise will be used to help locally, together with established partner organizations,” emphasizes Van der Bellen.
“Cohesion is possible”
Van der Bellen emphasized that a donation to the Christmas carols makes one independent of his beliefs “like a fourth king” and testifies “that help, cohesion and existence are possible for each other”.
