A Lower Austrian made a terrible discovery during a walk in October: a dead four-legged friend was lying on a leash in a tree on the riverbed of the Schwarza in Gloggnitz. The owner brings with him an adventurous responsibility in court, but this cannot be refuted.
In September, incredible amounts of water fell, especially in Lower Austria. The result: a millennium flood! Also in Gloggnitz. “We were very close to evacuation,” a police commander recalled of how the Schwarza became a raging body of water.
Dog left to drown?
Then the relaxation in October. The water level dropped again, revealing a terrible find. A Lower Austrian discovered a dog carcass during a walk with his four-legged friend. On a leash on a large bush. The shocking suspicion of the public prosecutor’s office in Wiener Neustadt (Lower Austria): the animal was leashed there by the owners and left to die.
Tears in the animal cruelty process
During the trial for animal cruelty, a 41-year-old and his partner, defended by lawyer Thomas Preclik, vehemently deny this. The German assures: “My dog ’Odin’ accompanied me for a long time. He was part of our family.” The mixed breed was 13 years old and died of natural causes on September 2. “I didn’t expect that at all,” says the driver with tears in his voice.
Then he begins an adventurous description of why his four-legged friend was found dead and on a leash on a riverbed. “I just acted emotionally and stupidly.” He was looking for a final resting place for ‘Odin’ – on his dog’s favorite hiking trail. But then the 41-year-old noticed: “You couldn’t dig there at all. “It’s all beyond me.” So he just left the animal carcass there and thought about a solution for days.
Animal carcasses on a leash
But then it started to rain – “I saw the water rising and rising.” The dead “Odin” was lying on the riverbed at the time. The father of the family decided to leash the dog’s carcass. “You actually don’t,” Mr. Rat asks incredulously. ‘I didn’t want it to be washed away. “I didn’t expect a once-in-a-century flood to happen,” sobs the 41-year-old.
As incredible as this responsibility may sound, the opposite could not be found at the Wiener Neustadt Regional Court. A report was not clear due to the poor condition of the carcass and there were no immediate witnesses. The German and his partner – together they have a daughter of one and a half years old – are therefore not legally acquitted.
