Pilot project in Melk – Students now give seniors “internet tutoring”

Date:

You can learn a lot from grandpa and grandpa, every child knows that. A flagship project at Melk High School in Lower Austria proves that it also works the other way around.

The internet has changed our lives in unimaginable ways. Many things, such as researching all kinds of information, have become easier as a result. But the keyboard of laptops and smartphones is like an organ, from which you can only extract tones with the necessary dexterity. It is not uncommon for older people in particular to encounter a digital hurdle that needs to be overcome.

Lower the digital inhibition threshold
A new project in Melk should significantly lower the inhibition threshold for retirees. “But we have set ourselves the goal of creating an offer for all citizens. Together with experts, we bring interested parties closer to the basics of computer science and train them in the use of computers and mobile phones,” says August Grubhofer, the new chairman of the Melker Seniors.

And because it is best learned from generation to generation, he has also secured the help of the local high school. Digital primary education is already on the schedule there. Selected students are now being used as teachers for the campaign – and the success so far proves Grubhofer right!
