Drama in Australia: South of Sydney, an off-duty police officer has died trying to save his ailing son from drowning in the sea. The 45-year-old officer, who was on vacation with his family, ended up in the current during the rescue operation on Bogola Beach south of Narooma.
While the 14-year-old survived, any help came too late for his father. Helpers who rushed out to sea in a boat were only able to determine his death despite immediate resuscitation measures, broadcaster 9News reported Monday, citing local police. The accident happened on an unguarded beach.
“He managed to pull his son out of the current, but was then pushed into the sea himself,” said police spokesman Paul Hoyer. He spoke of a “tragedy for his family, his friends and his colleagues”.
