Alexander Zverev added his second loss at the United Cup on Monday. The German, who had just lost his debut against Jiri Lehecka 6-4, 6-2, again fell hard (6-1, 6-4), this time against a great Taylor Fritz.
Fritz topped the scoreboard, winning the first five games of the match and entering the court to finish the points earned on his serve.
He is trying to beat Zverev, who is playing for the second time since June, when he tore ligaments in his right ankle in his semifinal against Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros.
Fritz, 25, is 3-4 head-to-heads with Zverev and 2-0 in the United States Cup after defeating Czech Jiri Lehecka in their opening match.
Madison Keys made it 2-0 in the tie with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jule Niemeierhis second of the season.
Keys comfortably prevailed over the 23-year-old German in a backcourt players’ match played on Monday, in just over 70 minutes.
While Keys served 77 percent and trailed just six points on her first serve, Niemeier struggled with the rhythm of her serve and started with three double faults that gave her opponent an early break.
Niemeier finished with seven double faults. “I think overall I played really well. I just tried to hit as many first serves as possible to make it as easy as a tennis match,” Keys said.
The series closes this Tuesday, when Jessica Pegula faces Laura Siegemund and Francis Tiafore against Oscar Otte.
