The balance of accidents with fireworks on New Year’s Eve is also bloody this year. Two boys from Vienna now join the list of victims. On the afternoon of New Year’s Day in Hernals, a 13-year-old man suffered serious injuries to his hand. Moments later, a firecracker exploded too close to the body of a 12-year-old…
At around 2:30 p.m., the 13-year-old was seriously injured on one of his fingers in Hildebrandgasse in the Hernals district, Andreas Huber, spokesman for the Vienna Professional Rescue Service, reported. The boy’s front finger joint was torn off by the blast. The 13-year-old also suffered abrasions and cuts, he said.
Cracks, bruises, burns
Only fifteen minutes later, at 2:45 p.m., the emergency services were called to Mitterhofergasse in Floridsdorf. A 12-year-old had set off fireworks there. It exploded too close to the boy’s body. He also suffered cuts and abrasions, as well as minor burns to the hand and face, Huber explained. Both boys received emergency medical care from the professional rescue service or the Samaritan Association and were taken to hospitals.
In Vienna, two people were already seriously injured by fireworks explosions on New Year’s Eve. A 23-year-old suffered serious hand injuries, the professional rescue service reported Sunday, as well as an 18-year-old who accidentally picked up a firecracker, after which it exploded in his hand.
Deadly explosion in Lower Austria
There is a fatality to be regretted during the explosion of a bullet bomb in Lower Austria. An 18-year-old had bent over one of the explosives in Ternitz – it exploded. He sustained such serious injuries that he succumbed to it. A colleague was flown to a hospital in Graz with life-threatening injuries. A 17-year-old and a 19-year-old were transported to Wiener Neustadt State Hospital.
After a fireworks accident in Lichtenau, a 16-year-old is still fighting for his life. It is now clear that the boy illegally bought category F4 fireworks in the Czech Republic in November. So he shouldn’t have owned or set off those fireworks.
