Two Tyroleans – and probably many others – were already looking forward to more than 200 euros. Your mobile provider would have charged too much. Unfortunately, there were scammers at work who only wanted to get their hands on the sensitive data of mobile phone users.
“You paid 234.16 euros too much. Request your compensation now!” Shortly before the turn of the year, two Tyroleans cheered for at least a few minutes with an email apparently from their mobile phone provider: “The supposedly good news actually came at just the right time, after I recently received an electricity supplement and numerous bought Christmas presents,” said Thomas K. (name known to the editors).
But the joy of the 28-year-old from Unterland did not last long – like that of a 52-year-old from Innsbruck. “I noticed that the sender’s email address had a dubious name, so I asked the company if the message actually came from them,” said the 28-year-old. The answer was sobering. The attached link clearly lures you to a bogus website. The scammers are likely targeting sensitive data. “Unfortunately, you don’t get anything for free,” Thomas K. can now smile.
Internet experts give tips
But what to do if you have actually fallen into the trap of criminals? “Contact your own bank immediately, change the password on the mobile phone provider’s website, watch out for unusual calls and report it to the police,” experts from “Watchlist Internet” advise.
