The process is taking place in Graz because the asylum seeker has fled to Styria during the large influx of refugees and can no longer be deported. Because he would receive the death penalty in his home country for the murder of the policeman. This fate would have befallen his accomplices.

Member of one of the largest terrorist militias?
According to the indictment, the accused Shiite (Shiite is the second largest religious group in Islam after Sunnis) belongs to the “Badr Brigade”. It is the strongest of the 50 or so terrorist organizations in Iraq that were set up in 2014 in response to IS.

The brigade has taken on the task of cutting communication lines to the west and has long controlled the interior ministry in Baghdad. According to experts, the organization is thus becoming an increasing obstacle to the stabilization of Iraq.

The trial for murder in the name of terror begins on February 20. The jury is expected to make its verdict in early March.
