Flames in front of a mosque shortly after New Year’s Eve in Vienna’s Ottakring district: the fire broke out at the entrance. According to the police, it cannot be ruled out that the fire was caused intentionally.
It was deployed shortly after the turn of the year at around 0.30 am, the management confirms. The fire raged in front of the mosque’s entrance. “The State Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism in Vienna is carrying out the investigations and they are in full swing. Investigations are currently being carried out in all directions. It cannot be ruled out that the fire was started deliberately.”
“Unfortunately, the year starts with sad news. Our mosque in Vienna’s Ottakring was the victim of an act of vandalism. Causes and backgrounds are still unknown. Police and authorities are already aware. We expect the incident to be clarified,” the president of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ), Ümit Vural, wrote on Twitter.
