New York Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency after the polio virus was discovered in sewer samples from four boroughs. Unvaccinated residents of the metropolis are being urged to get vaccinated. “With polio, we can’t leave anything to chance,” New York City health commissioner Mary Bassett said in a statement.
The viral disease poliomyelitis, also known as poliomyelitis, was diagnosed in New York state for the first time in nearly a decade in July. Polio is an incurable viral disease that often remains asymptomatic, but can also cause flu-like symptoms such as sore throat, fever, fatigue and nausea. In a small percentage of cases, the virus can enter the nervous system and cause irreversible paralysis.
Exterminated in Germany since the 1960s
The disease was once the most feared disease in the United States, with about 35,000 people experiencing waves of infection each year. In Germany, the virus has been considered eradicated since national vaccinations in the 1960s. The polio virus was also found in London in June, for the first time since the 1980s.
