The former general secretary of the UGT, Nicholas Redondo Urbietadied in Madrid at the age of 95, the union reported tonight.
In the statement, the UGT regrets his death and recalls his “intense struggle for the rights of working people, the improvement of employment and equality in Spanish society”.
Nicolás Redondo was born in Barakaldo in 1927. As a metalworker for La Naval, he joined the UGT and the PSOE in 1945. He was general secretary of the union from 1976 to 1994, although since 1971 he had already worked as a political secretary, a figure prior to the post of Secretary General.

Redondo, according to the UGT, was “an essential figure of trade unionism in Spain, during Franco’s dictatorship, transition and in democracy”. In this sense, the union recalls that in his struggle for social justice, he was repeatedly arrested and persecuted by Franco’s dictatorship for his political and union activities.
On April 18, 1976 he was elected Secretary General of the UGT and was also a PSOE deputy for Bizkaia in 1977, 1979, 1982 and 1986, in 1987 he resigned.
