In the United States, the availability of abortion pills is being expanded considerably: in the future they will also be available in pharmacies, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on Tuesday (local time). The drug mifepristone may therefore be sold by pharmacies in countries where abortion is allowed. A doctor’s prescription is required.
Until now, the abortion pill was only available in medical practices and clinics with the appropriate approval and some mail-order pharmacies. Pharmacies that want to sell abortion pills must be certified under the new FDA rules. A written consent from the patient is required for the release of the medicinal product.
demand has risen sharply
In the US, demand for abortion pills, which prevent implantation of a fetus in the womb immediately after fertilization of an egg, has surged following a landmark Supreme Court ruling on abortion last year.
In June, the Supreme Court, dominated by conservative judges, abolished the country’s basic right to abortion, which had been in effect for nearly 50 years. This gave states the ability to massively restrict abortions or ban them altogether. Many conservative states have already done so.
Abortion pills are gaining ground
According to experts, more than half of all abortions in the United States are already performed using abortion pills. In the political and legal battle for abortion rights, resources play an increasingly important role.
The American civil rights organization ACLU welcomed the future easier access to abortion pills. This removes an “unnecessary burden” from patients, ACLU representative Julia Kaye explained. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the anti-abortion organization Susan B. Anthony List, condemned the decision. The administration of US President Joe Biden proves “once again that the profits of the abortion industry are more important than the safety of women and the lives of unborn children”.
