On Friday, the European Commission approved the renewed corona vaccine from the Mainz-based manufacturer Biontech and its American partner Pfizer. In EU countries, this will be used against the dominant variant Omikron XBB.1.5 in the fall.
The Comirnaty vaccine is the third adapted vaccine used in the EU. The committee approved use for adults, children and infants as young as six months old.
The European Medicines Agency approved the vaccine earlier this week.
The EMA recommends vaccination with the updated vaccine, regardless of previous corona vaccinations.
Biontech and Pfizer had announced that they would be able to supply the vaccine to EU countries immediately after approval.
