Macron: “He stays” – Niger has revoked the immunity of the French ambassador

Date:

The dispute between France and the putschists in Niger comes to a head. French ambassador Sylvain Itte’s diplomatic immunity has been revoked. The country’s police have orders to take the 64-year-old out of the country.

In addition, the military junta has banned international organizations from working in military ‘operational zones’. “All activities or movements in the deployment areas have been suspended for the time being,” the interior ministry said late Thursday evening in the capital Niamey. The measure was taken due to the “current security situation,” the report said. UN agencies, non-governmental and other international organizations are affected by the ban. Where these “operational zones” are located has not been explained in detail.

Ultimatum to ambassador expired
The new military government announced last Friday that the French ambassador had to leave the country within 48 hours. The reason given was that this was in response to France’s actions, which were against Niger’s interests. However, French President Emmanuel Macron stressed that Itte would remain in his post. At the same time, Macron confirmed that his country still stands with deposed, democratically elected Niger President Mohamed Bazoum.

The putschists led by General Abdourahamane Tiani ousted Bazoum on July 26 and placed him under house arrest. The deposed ruler is accused of high treason.
