Farewell, death, inheritance – exciting myths about the death of great popes

Date:

Myths and legends belong to the Catholic Church as the white Pileolus – ie the dainty skullcap – belongs to the popes. Doubters hang on their lips as much as believers, hoping for gestures and words that bring blessings or reveal secrets. Stories are entwined around the last words of great popes, their deaths spark conspiracy theories, and their wills often leave room for interpretation from good to bad. A selection of examples.

What do Pope John Paul I and UFOs have in common? Right, not much except conspiracy theories: according to which there should be a connection between aliens and the death of the young pope in 1978. A wonderful example of how the deaths of church leaders have always fueled stories and myths. Because after their deaths there is still a lot of room for interpretation – with their last doings, even with the way they died.
