The feared flare-up of violent protests failed to materialize on the French national holiday. The traditional Friday morning military parade in Paris took place without incident under high security. President Emmanuel Macron received some boos and applause as he drove down the Champs-Elysée in an open military vehicle.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited as guest of honour. The infantry parade was opened by 240 Indian soldiers and a French Rafale fighter jet of the Indian Air Force also took part in the air show. In this way, France wants to deepen its 25-year partnership with India.
This year’s July 14 celebration was overshadowed by the recent riots that broke out after a police officer fatally shot a 17-year-old. They therefore took place under heightened security measures.
