President Emmanuel Macron received some boos and applause as he drove down the Champs-Elysée in an open military vehicle.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was invited as guest of honour. The infantry parade was opened by 240 Indian soldiers and a French Rafale fighter jet of the Indian Air Force also took part in the air show. In this way, France wants to deepen its 25-year partnership with India.
This year’s July 14 celebration was overshadowed by the recent riots that broke out after a police officer fatally shot a 17-year-old. They therefore took place under heightened security measures.
