With the flu epidemic, which started early this season and is rampant with significant numbers of infections, there is still no clarity after the turn of the year. MedUni Vienna’s Center for Virology, the domestic reference laboratory for flu viruses, found on Wednesday that “influenza virus activity in Austria remained high.” There are fewer sample submissions due to the holiday season, but the positive percentage of proof of flu was 52 percent last week.
The flu reporting service of the city of Vienna estimated flu infections and the “real flu” (influenza) in the federal capital at a total of about 31,000 new cases in the previous week (week 52). In week 50, almost 34,000 were extrapolated and in the week after (week 51) 31,550 new cases – so since then at a similarly high, but therefore slightly declining level, but still more than twice as many infections as at the peaks of the past ones so far Flu waves in Vienna before the corona pandemic.
Seven-day incidence of Corona significantly lower
The Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES) also recorded the peak of the rapid increase in new infections (incidence) in its Austria-wide projection of flu and flu-like illnesses three weeks ago. In week 50 there was a seven-day incidence of 5850 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, the following week this dropped to about 5300. By way of comparison: the seven-day incidence of reported corona infections was less than 400 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the period just before Christmas and is currently below a value of 300.
Outside Austria, however, there was no easing of the flu situation. According to MedUni, the increasing activity of the influenza virus continues to predominate in Europe.
