Chaos in the US Congress – appearing as “speaker”: It was not up to McCarthy

Date:

The US Republicans are denying their majority leader in the House of Representatives the post of “Speaker”. It’s not up to the candidate. But at the office itself.

The first day of the new Congress without a Democratic majority was incredibly embarrassing for Republican Kevin McCarthy. Even after three rounds of voting, the entire Republican right wing did not want to elect him to the office of “Speaker”, ie Speaker of the US House of Representatives. After all, the third highest political office in American politics. 19 of the loudest “radicals” among Republicans refuse to support him.

McCarthy made concession after concession, but it wasn’t enough. “But that’s not up to him,” says US expert Yussi Pick in the interview with “Krone”. Because McCarthy himself belongs to the “radicals”, a staunch supporter of ex-President Donald Trump and partly responsible for the fact that the Republican Party has taken a big step to the right in recent years.

“It just shows how radical Republicans have already become,” Pick said. “They don’t refuse McCarthy, they refuse. The ‘Speaker’ is a representative of the establishment. And you should not pursue this office,” explains Pick. McCarthy finally received support from Trump himself on Wednesday (see video above).

There would have been new elections in Austria
Right-wing populists have once again inflicted serious damage on American democracy and parliamentarianism. The House of Representatives cannot meet without a speaker, which means that one House is absent. No laws can be passed, no deputies sworn in. There is a vacuum. In Austria there would be new elections in such a case.
