The number of Ukrainian refugees in Europe has reached nearly eight million. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Thursday recorded a total of 7,915,287 registered refugees from Ukraine across Europe, including 90,994 who received temporary protection in Austria as displaced persons.
According to the UNHCR, more than 17 million people have left the country for other European countries since the start of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Since then, more than 9.1 million Ukrainians have returned to their homeland.
Most Ukrainians flee via Poland
According to UNHCR, most Ukrainians – more than 8.6 million – have crossed the border into Poland. More than 1.5 million Ukrainians are still officially registered there and more than 6.5 million have already returned to Ukraine from Poland.
According to UNHCR, two million Ukrainians came to Hungary, the number of returnees from Hungary is not specified. 33,316 Ukrainian refugees are registered in Hungary. According to the UNHCR, more than 1.7 million Ukrainians came to Romania, 1.4 million returned and 106,786 were registered. More than a million Ukrainians crossed the border into Slovakia, over 807,211 returned to their homeland and 105,205 are registered there.
Over a million in Germany
According to the UNHCR, more than one million refugees from Ukraine are currently registered in Germany, more than 166,000 in Italy, more than 164,000 in Spain, about 152,000 in Britain, nearly 119,000 in France and more than 102,000 in Moldova. According to the UN Emergency Relief Agency (OCHA) in December, there are also about 5.6 million internally displaced persons in Ukraine as a result of the war.
