Japan: Tuna fetched 260,000 euros at auction

Date:

A bluefin tuna fetched the equivalent of $260,000 at an auction in Tokyo. That’s not even a record.

Cheers, meal! This bluefin tuna pictured fetched about €260,000 at the first auction of the new year at Japan’s famed Tokyo Fish Market. The 212 kilo fish was caught off the northern tip of the main island of Honshu. Yukitaka Yamaguchi, president of wholesale Yamayuki, and star sushi restaurant Onodera Group bought it on Thursday.

The kilo price of the fish is around 1220 euros. Before the 2019 pandemic, buyers in the Toyosu market even paid the record price of a whopping 2.2 million euros for a tuna.
