Streets blocked – fighting after the arrest of the son of “El Chapo”

Fighting has erupted in northwestern Mexico between suspected gang members and security forces after the arrest of a son of notorious drug kingpin Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán. Criminals blocked roads with buses and trucks and set fire to the vehicles in the city of Culiacán, TV shows Thursday (video above). Numerous shots were heard.

Soldiers had previously arrested Ovidio Guzmán, as reported by Mexican media, citing security circles. After his father’s arrest, he took over part of the Sinaloa cartel and was one of the main dealers of the drug fentanyl in the Latin American country. Together with his brothers, he repeatedly confronted other factions within the Sinaloa Cartel.

Produces up to 2.5 tons of medicines per month
He was arrested once before in 2019, but was later released on orders from President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to stop fierce fighting between criminals and security forces. According to estimates by the US authorities, he runs a number of laboratories for the production of methamphetamine and is said to produce between 1.5 and 2.5 tons of the drug per month. He also allegedly ordered the murder of informants, rivals and a singer who refused to perform at his wedding.

Schools and the airport were closed
In view of the clashes, Governor Rubén Rocha Moya called on people in Sinaloa to stay home. Schools, public buildings and Culiacan Airport are closed. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico advised against travel to Sinaloa.

The US State Department has put bounty on bounties
According to media reports, Guzmán was taken to a military base in Mexico City. The US State Department had placed a $5 million bounty on his head. A Washington court charged him with drug smuggling in 2018.

Vader would be responsible for 3000 murders
His father, “El Chapo”, was one of the most powerful drug traffickers in the world. The former head of the Sinaloa cartel smuggled tons of cocaine and heroin into the US and made billions from it. He is also believed to have been responsible for up to 3,000 murders. He escaped from maximum security prisons in Mexico twice. After his final arrest, he was extradited to the United States and sentenced to life imprisonment.
