Unusual animal hunting in the Mühlviertel in Upper Austria. On New Year’s Eve, an emu and a nandu escaped. Especially the hunt for the emu turned out to be quite difficult.
It was the sound of fireworks and rockets that sent an emu rooster and a nandu chicken into a panic on New Year’s Eve in Alberndorf in der Riedmark. The ratites broke through their fence and fled. The female Nandu who was running towards the city center was caught in a garage by the owners.

Initially, however, there was no trace of the emu rooster “Momo”. When the Australian bird appeared in a garden in the village of Oberschwandt (Waldburg) on New Year’s Day, police officers alerted Freistadt’s animal rescue service. “Unfortunately, he escaped into a forest,” says animal rescuer Tamara Binder (23). In the morning of January 2, “Momo” was first seen in St. Peter and then in the afternoon in Lichtenau (Grünbach).
Difficult task
On January 3, he surprised people in the village of Prendt (Windhaag), but disappeared again in the woods. On Thursday, residents there reported that he was back on the scene – the five-person animal rescue crew drove off again. “When we arrived I immediately lured him in with a feed bucket while my companions very carefully formed a circle around him,” explains Binder. Cornered emus can be very dangerous.
Strong feet for defense
“In addition to their beaks, they have extremely strong feet whose nails they use as weapons.” Together they managed to grab the emu and secure it to the ground with a net, loops and ties.

“We attached the head with a coat.” In this position they waited 30 minutes for the owner. “They were very happy to see each other again,” says Binder. And “Momo” is now enjoying the quiet everyday life again in the residence in Alberndorf after his adventure.
