The Republican leader has garnered 216 votes and managed to unblock the institution after four days of blockade
Republican leader Kevin McCarthy was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives Saturday morning after winning the majority of Republicans on the 15th ballot.
The California congressman received 216 votes, two short of the established majority of 218, but that was enough after six congressmen voted “present” who abstained from casting a vote and so reduced the total vote to a to achieve a majority.
The four days of voting have paralyzed the activity of the House of Representatives and created a legislative crisis unprecedented in more than 150 years, all after disagreements between different factions of the Republican Party flared.
With very little margin for error, McCarthy, aiming to retain the small Republican majority in the House of Representatives given the 222 seats the party won in the midterm elections, was only able to win by 15 votes.
