250,000 km² affected – Prime Minister: 40 percent of Ukraine’s mining area

Date:

The Russian offensive war in Ukraine has created a minefield of 250,000 square kilometers in his country, according to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal. “It is currently the largest minefield in the world,” Schmyhal said in an interview published Saturday with South Korea’s Yonhap news agency.

According to Schmyhal, the reclaimed area corresponds to more than 40 percent of Ukraine’s total land area. “Not only does this make it difficult for people to travel, but it also causes major disruption to agriculture, one of our most important industries,” the prime minister said.

The residential areas of the civilian population were hardest hit by the Russian war of aggression in his country. “Russia is targeting infrastructure in densely populated areas,” said Shmyhal Yonhap. In addition, industrial facilities such as chemical plants, steel mills and travel infrastructure were among the targets of the attacker.

“Form of Russian Terror”
A month ago, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy complained about the danger of Russian mines on Ukrainian territory. “This is the form of Russian terror that we will face in the coming years,” he said in a video message to his compatriots.

Zelenskyy accused Moscow of deliberately abandoning the mines as a mortal threat to civilians. Mine terror should be one of the charges against Russia after the war, he explained.
