Tragic mountain accident Saturday afternoon in Zirl in the Tyrolean district of Innsbruck-Land: a German climber (32) fell 120 meters after he and his two companions had already overcome the rock face and were fatally injured.
The 32-year-old hiked with his two colleagues (aged 23 and 26) to the Ehnbachklamm in Zirl to undertake the “Jimmy’Kanal” multi-pitch tour. Once the trio had climbed the slope, they put their climbing equipment on the way out and set out to descend to the valley floor on foot.
Lost the path, lost your footing
And then it happened: the 32-year-old went off the path for unknown reasons, ended up in pathless terrain, then suddenly lost his footing and fell 120 meters to the base of the wall.
Companions have made a distress call
His shocked companions immediately put in a distress call. For the fallen climber, however, all help came too late, the arriving emergency doctor was only able to determine the man’s death.
The German’s body was eventually recovered by the Zirl mountain rescue service. His colleagues were taken care of by a crisis intervention team.
