Thousands of people celebrated the Pride march for equal rights for non-heterosexuals in the Belgian capital Brussels on Saturday. The purpose of the train is to celebrate the diversity, tolerance and acceptance of all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. The theme of the parade was ‘Protect the protest’.
Belgian media reported a cheerful colorful crowd of about 150,000 people attending the celebration of the 20th anniversary of same-sex marriage in Belgium.
“Nice party”
“Pride is a great party where everyone can be themselves,” said Brussels Pride spokeswoman Radjiny Schiltz, according to the Belgian news agency Belga. But there is still a lot to do for equality in the LGBTQIA+ community, for example for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
Schiltz said the parade slogan was taken from Amnesty International’s campaign to protect the right to protest. Too many people took the law for granted. “Everyone thinks that this right is guaranteed everywhere, but that is absolutely not the case. There is still a lot to do for freedom and diversity.”
