The food chain Edeka only wanted to advertise regional sausages in a branch in Hennigsdorf, Brandenburg. But the stuffed beef campaign in the sausage section went horribly wrong. The action was not only well received on the internet, animal welfare organization Peta spoke of a “macabre and disrespectful mistreatment of a dead animal”.
The advertising campaign featuring “Anton” initially drew criticism from Instagram. One user posted a photo and called the action distasteful. Then a debate erupted on Twitter, with one user writing, among other things, “Incredible,” another replying, “Dead animals are normal.”
“Anton” has already been removed from the industry
“It is absolutely cynical to prepare the corpse of a living creature and place it among animal products such as liverwurst as a supposed decoration,” Peta said. The organization demanded that “Anton” be removed. The “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” quoted a spokeswoman for Edeka on Saturday as saying, “The farm has already picked up the model.”
Edeka defends action
Edeka defended the advertising campaign. “The livestock model is an exhibition of a regional farm (with free-range cattle) from Brandenburg, which was intended to highlight the supplier’s products as part of a campaign,” said a spokeswoman for the company. “So far, our customers have responded positively to this.”
