A Syrian lost his cool after class because his classmate was more skilled than he was in German class and made him feel it. The 23-year-old rammed his peer three times in the body and neck with a knife. The man was sentenced to 14 years in prison for attempted murder.
Judgment in the trial of a Syrian who fled to Austria, who stabbed his compatriot after a German course in Vienna and suffered life-threatening injuries. The momentous dispute in July 2022 was triggered by a discussion over who made better German progress in the BFI course. Eleven Syrians attended the training, but the later victim learned much more easily than the ten other young men.
“I was always able to answer everything quickly and correctly”
“He was the best student, was fast and always answered all questions,” says a classmate who was called as a witness in the follow-up hearing at the Vienna court. The accused 23-year-old did not like it at all: he called his classmate a “nerd”, who in turn called the later perpetrator “lazy”. On July 12, the situation escalated. The 23-year-old stabbed him three times, hitting his hardworking classmate in the carotid artery.
Victim went after perpetrator
“There is no doubt that the defendant accepted that his victim could die,” the prosecution is pushing for a conviction for attempted murder. The suspect claims that the stabbing preceded the stabbing, but he firmly denies any intent to kill. His lawyer Andreas Reichenbach confirms this: “The victim followed my client after the course and deliberately sought provocation. There was an argument, the defendant hit him, but not in a targeted manner,” he said in his plea.
The verdict of the jury presided over by Christina Salzborn was attempted murder: 14 years in prison, not final.
