Footballer arrested – Three more death sentences imposed in Iran

Date:

Iran’s judiciary has again issued three death sentences. In addition, five men were sentenced to prison terms, including ex-footballer Amir Nasr-Asadani. Sunday’s dissident demonstrations were the largest in more than a month.

Iranians took to the streets in at least 17 cities to protest the third anniversary of the downing of a Ukrainian airliner by the Revolutionary Guards (IRGD) in at least 17 cities, according to the Washington-based think tank Institute for the Study of War (ISW). At that point, amid military tensions with the United States, all 176 people had been killed. The Iranian government then spoke of a “human error” and agreed to pay compensation.

The current nationwide protests began in September following the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in police custody. The young Kurd was arrested by the so-called moral police for violating the current Islamic dress code. Since then, protesters have been repeatedly arrested or even killed. Mohammed-Mehdi K. (22) and Seyed-Mohammed H. (39) were hanged on Saturday. The two men were blamed for the death of a security guard in November. In December, the judiciary also handed down two death sentences against men.

Gathering in front of the prison near Tehran
Because of this approach, protesters are now gathering in front of prisons, among other places. Social media users reported crowds of people in front of a detention center near the capital Tehran on Monday evening, including relatives of the detainees. The judiciary recently handed down three death sentences in connection with the systemic protests. According to the New York Times, the suspects included 19-year-old Mohammed G., who allegedly set fire to a government building and injured a security officer, and a 22-year-old hairdresser. Mohammed B. is said to have hit a police officer.

The suspects can still appeal the verdicts. Five prison terms were also imposed. Among them is ex-footballer Amir Nasr-Asadani, who was sentenced on three counts to a total of 26 years in prison. Iranian justice acquitted another man.
