One brutality surpasses another as the prosecutor at the Vienna Regional Court begins leveling accusation after accusation against a 35-year-old suspect. Two men allegedly stole the car together with their accomplices and then left them beaten. An incident with his ex-girlfriend and her husband also shocked…
“In the next few minutes I will tell you a crime thriller – which unfortunately is not a film,” begins the public prosecutor in Vienna: “I have never read it in that form.” And she is not exaggerating: a 35-year-old is said to have committed three incredible acts of violence.
“Just left on a dirt road”
In October 2016, the suspect and friends allegedly beat a 19-year-old in his own car. They simply got into the Mercedes and attacked the young man. “Then they kicked him into the trunk and simply dumped him on a dirt road,” the prosecutor said. The victim was seriously injured. The gang took the vehicle and valuables.
Leave the next victim in front of the warehouse
Just four days later, the next very similar incident occurred. The men slowed down a 53-year-old on his way to work early in the morning and also beat him unconscious in his Opel. “He was already on the ground and no longer moving,” the prosecutor emphasizes the brutality. In that condition they dumped him in front of a warehouse; the injuries are said to be life-threatening. “I assumed he was dead,” an accomplice admitted during his trial.
Ex kidnapped and raped
The last brutal act of violence: the Serb, together with accomplices, is said to have kidnapped his ex-girlfriend and her husband to a warehouse. “A martyrdom of several hours begins,” the prosecutor said. While he was beaten and tied up there, the 35-year-old allegedly raped the woman several times.
His accomplices have long since been sentenced to long prison terms. The defendant fled to Serbia until April last year and was then arrested in Romania. Now he has to appear in court for, among other things, attempted murder. Ultimately, the 53-year-old victim’s several fractures would have been life-threatening.
Years after the brutality of the trial, attorney Michael Dohr released a partial confession from his client: “Certain things were, of course, terrible.” The Serb committed the physical injuries and the carjacking ‘during a difficult phase of aggression’ – the attempted murder and the violent abuse, but not his ex-girlfriend. “As the prosecutor described it, it’s just a bad crime story,” Dohr said in the prosecutor’s opening remarks.
Ultimately, there is no admission of guilt
Not much of the announced partial confession remained in the interrogation of the 35-year-old. “Of course everyone has their own view of things,” he answers, confronted with the incriminating statements of his accomplices. “You first plead guilty and now tell us in detail that you actually did nothing? “It’s like saying that the sun is shining outside, but it’s actually raining,” the judge summarizes, slightly irritated.
There is still a trial date for witnesses and experts on October 5. The accomplices at the time must also be questioned.
