In the capital of India, a court is now considering the question of who invented the world-famous dish Butter Chicken. Two restaurant chains have long claimed to have invented the dish. One of them sued her competition.
Moti Mahal demands that Daryaganj stop bragging about the inventions and also wants 20 million rupees (221,000 euros) in compensation. Both chains also claim to have invented the popular lentil dish Dal Mahhani.
The operators of Moti Mahal claim on their website that founder Kundal Lal Gujral came up with the idea for the dish after his tandoori chicken dried out.
Here’s a tweet about the lawsuit.
The other restaurant chain says its relative Kundan Lal Jaggi, together with another ancestor, ran the first restaurant in the Indian capital Delhi, where the dish was first prepared. Now, both people on social media and a court have addressed the issue.
Butter Chicken is a type of curry made with chicken and a spiced tomato butter sauce. Dal Makhani is a modern version of traditional lentil dishes that includes legumes, butter and whipped cream.
