Climate activism sucks. The majority of the population agrees on that. “It also hurts my nerves,” agrees “Krone” environmental journalist Mark Perry with the statement of police president Gerhard Pürstl on krone.tv. Sticking to the road with “semi-toxic” super glue is anything but environmentally friendly. And it wouldn’t do any good either. “It bounces off people,” Perry says in a live conversation with moderator Conny Winiwarter. Either way, it would hit the wrong people.
Namely the “common people” and not the political decision makers. The action weeks of the climate activists – traffic must be blocked every day in the early morning – are even negative for the environment: “Long traffic jams, increased CO2 emissions” and on top of that the hatred and anger of the drivers. “I miss any sort of ecological logic,” Perry says angrily.
In addition: the super glue for sticking is “semi-toxic” – and therefore anything but environmentally friendly. Nevertheless: “Any young person who shows idealism has my heart – but please not like this”. The alternative? Approach the matter actively and positively: “For example, plan trees.”
“Even a Green” criticizes
Perry, who has been active in the environmental scene for 40 years, also has contact with activists. They say: “We remain non-violent and peaceful”. A change of strategy would be necessary, because even if activists deliberately fail to stop an emergency vehicle or the like, “it still happens”. And according to Perry, it should be punishable.
Political attention is the self-proclaimed goal of the activists – and you get it: but the tenor is completely negative. To date, no politician has spoken positively about the climate protests. Even Vice Chancellor Werner Kogler was criticized. “And that’s a green,” notes Perry.
“We are on track”
If the climate activists have their way, the world will soon end. Perry dismisses it: “We have always been on the right track and Austria is not doing too badly”. So we would have one of the best forest laws and be the number one organic country. “We are on a good ecological path,” said the environmental journalist, who also praised Leonore Gewessler (Greens).
The cause of all evil…
Dissolving the oil and gas lobby won’t happen. It’s a matter of not wanting to, not of ‘not being able to’. “Greed is the driving force” – whether this mortal sin actually costs us our lives remains to be seen.
