Polarized topic – mobilize opponents of abortion: demonstrations in Innsbruck

Date:

The state government of Tyrol is investigating the possibility of abortion in a public hospital. This fuels a debate that has been going on for decades. Opponents of abortion mobilize and call for a demonstration. But they are not the only ones taking to the streets.

“A clear no to abortions in Tyrolean clinics.” Signatures are currently being collected in Tyrol for this. The ‘Youth for Life’ association is behind the initiative, which arose from Catholic circles in the 1990s. A demonstration in Innsbruck is planned for Saturday.

The invitation went to more than 230,000 Tyrolean households. “We expect 500 or more participants, but that is difficult to estimate in advance,” explains Tyrolean spokeswoman Natalie Ehrenberger to “Krone” when asked. However, a counter-demonstration has now also been announced.

Coordination with representatives of hospitals begins
The topic of abortion is polarizing and is again hotly debated in Tyrol. Reason: The state government wants to explore the possibility in public hospitals. “A reconciliation date has been agreed with hospital representatives for mid-January,” says LR Cornelia Hagele (ÖVP) of Health. However, Hagele only speaks of one provision.

Social and female LR Eva Pawlata (SPÖ) expected more. “The primary goal is to expand the existing range of abortion services. That is only because there is currently only one doctor in the established area who offers this procedure,” Pawlata refers to the current situation.

The Tyrolean ÖVP was always in the way
The law on installments has been in force in Austria for almost 50 years. But any demand for more contact points for pregnant women in need has since been suppressed by the ÖVP in Tyrol. Against this background, Hagele’s position is quite remarkable. She speaks of the fact that the intervention “should be possible in the established space or in a public institution”.

She was heavily criticized for this by “Youth for Life” and described as a “driving force in these anti-family efforts” within the ÖVP.

For representatives of the “Action Committee on Abortion,” the country’s current initiative comes late in meeting a long-standing demand. The demonstrations on Saturday are viewed with mixed feelings. Spokeswoman Julia Schratz fears further polarization “that harms women”.
