A woman died when a house collapsed in the German city of Bochum. After hours of searching, rescuers found them among the rubble. The body is believed to be the 61-year-old homeowner, a police spokesman said early Wednesday morning. The apartment building collapsed completely after an explosion on Tuesday evening.
Photos showed the extent of the destruction: where the two-and-a-half-story building once stood, only a heap of rubble remained after the accident. The road was strewn with stones. A short time later, numerous neighbors called 911 and reported a loud bang.
Residents managed to free themselves from the rubble
In addition to the owner, two other people lived in the house, police said. One of them was able to free himself from the rubble and was taken to hospital with minor injuries. The third was not home. Other people were no longer suspected under the rubble.
Emergency services were able to measure gas in the channel
The cause of the alleged explosion was initially unclear. According to the municipal utility company, the building did not have a gas connection. Nevertheless, gas was measured in the canal and nearby buildings. It is therefore assumed that there has been a gas leak there.
