A group of soldiers has one coup and seized power Gabon to remove the country’s president, Ali Bongo, from office. Bongo, now “under house arrest”, came to power in 2009 after the death of his father, Omar Bongo, who had ruled since 1967. He won last Saturday’s election amid allegations of opposition fraud .
The elections have been annulled and the borders closed, as announced by a dozen soldiers, who identified themselves as members of a Committee for the Transition and Restoration of Institutions (CTRI), who appeared on television to announce that they have taken power. the face of what he describes as a “serious institutional, political, economic and social crisis”.
The president re-elected in the election is being held at his home with his family and one of his sons has been arrested for “high treason” as announced by the coup army.
Hundreds of people, for their part, took to the streets this morning in Libreville, the country’s capital, in support of the army. After the broadcast of the message on television, the social network X (formerly Twitter) is full of videos of Gabonese people celebrating their uprising.
