Thousands of years old ostrich eggs have been discovered during excavations in Israel’s Negev desert. Investigators found the broken shells of the eight eggs next to an old fireplace, the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) said.
The eggs are between 4000 and 7500 years old. Because the bowls had long been covered by sand dunes, they were well preserved, according to the bureau’s director. In addition, the climate in the region is very dry.
Native to Egypt until the 19th century
The authority said the find could teach a lot about the lives of the nomads who roamed the desert in ancient times. Ostriches were widespread in the wild in the region until they became extinct in the 19th century.
Previous finds indicated that ostrich eggs were used as luxury items, jewelery or water vessels, said Amir Gorzalczany of the Antiquities Authority. However, they also served as a source of food. “An ostrich egg has the nutritional value of about 25 normal chicken eggs,” Gorzalczany said.
Are “put together like a puzzle”
The eggs would now be put together “like a jigsaw puzzle” and examined in a laboratory. “The best is yet to come,” says IAA Excavation Director Lauren Davis.
