Expulsion before completion – Greta Thunberg arrived in Lützerath

Date:

Although the evacuation of the village of Lützerath is almost complete, according to the police, other activists are still arriving. Greta Thunberg arrived from Sweden on Friday, the Last Generation group announced from Austria.

Thunberg (20) protested together with green politician Luisa Neubauer (26) and other people in front of the closed village for the preservation of the settlement. The ‘Bild’ reports this online on Friday afternoon. “Lützi stays, Lützi stays” was shouted. Thunberg had arrived a day earlier for this. Originally she had only announced her visit for Saturday. Austrians have also pledged their support.

The last generation arrives by train
After the Secession action in Vienna, part of the Last Generation group boarded a train on Friday and headed for Lützerath, Germany. There are demonstrations on the spot against the evacuation and for climate protection. Representatives of the LobauBleibt, Fridays For Future and System Change, not Climate Change movements also come from Austria. “Places like Lützerath decide whether we will be successful in the fight for our future! It’s not just a village being destroyed here – it’s literally about our livelihood, which needs to be dredged and burned. We will stop the destruction where it happens (…),” said Manuel Grebenjak of System Change, not Climate Change.

Demonstration in Vienna
Klara König of Fridays for Future also announced a solidarity demonstration in Vienna. According to the police, the evacuation in Lützerath in North Rhine-Westphalia is now nearing completion. The evacuation of the last building started on Friday. Some activists still have to be taken out of tree houses, two are in a tunnel.

Men with hood in tunnel
This assumption goes back to a video showing two masked men claiming to be in the tunnel under Lützerath. “We have proof that the video is authentic,” police confirmed. The police chief of Aachen, Dirk Weinspach, does not know whether the activists are chained. He thinks it is “just bad what dangers these people take on”. Since communication with the telephone no longer works, they have switched to radios.

The chief of police assumes that there is no acute danger for the two activists. Friday night would have been quiet. On Friday morning, however, activists, including the group Extinction Rebellion, appeared in front of RWE headquarters in Essen. Three people chained themselves to a roller gate and blocked the entrance. For example, they protested against the eviction of Lützerath.

The Minister of Climate Protection has little understanding for this
German Climate Protection Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) showed little understanding for the protests against the demolition of Lützerath. “There are many good reasons to demonstrate for more climate protection, including against the Greens. But Lützerath is just the wrong symbol,” he told “Spiegel”. With this opinion, however, he only has a part of the Greens behind him. By Friday morning, more than 2,000 members of the party had signed an open letter against the expulsion.

After the evacuation of Lützerath, an expansion of the lignite mining areas is planned. In a survey by the ZDF “Politikbarometer”, 59 percent of those questioned are against such an extension, while 33 percent are in favour. However, this result says nothing about whether the respondents agree with the current protest or not. A large rally has been announced for Saturday in the neighboring Lützerath town of Keyenberg. 6,000 to 7,000 participants are expected, including Greta Thunberg,
