Tire Nichols died – as reported – after a traffic stop by the police. Now the autopsy report is available: the 29-year-old American suffered severe bleeding from severe blows.
According to a family lawyer, Nichols was beaten by emergency services for several minutes after the traffic stop. Nichols was stopped by police on Jan. 7 in Memphis, Tennessee, for “reckless driving.” According to the police, there had been “confrontations”. Nichols succumbed to his injuries in hospital a few days later.
A video of the operation is published
The Memphis Police Department said Friday it had fired five officers over the incident. They said they used excessive force, did not intervene and did not provide assistance. All five fired police officers were also black. The family’s lawyer called the police’s actions racist. Video of the police operation is expected to be released in the coming days.
In the United States there are regular deadly police operations of a similar nature, representative of which is the case of George Floyd: in May 2020, the African-American was killed in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis. The case sparked nationwide protests against police brutality and racism. Since then, there has always been dismay at similar cases.
