After several stabbings with injured people on Reumannplatz in Vienna-Favoriten, the weapons ban zone has now come into effect.
Saturday morning. Eight o’clock. At that time, Vienna’s second weapons ban zone, at Reumannplatz, came into effect. However, anyone expecting a large police presence was disappointed. Besides a few walkers and night owls on their way home, only one police patrol wandered into the square.
That the weapons ban zone does indeed make sense was demonstrated once again on Saturday evening. Around the corner from Reumannplatz, on Quellenstrasse, a 29-year-old was robbed on his way home by two unknown perpetrators. According to the police, the man was approached by the perpetrators around 1.45 am when he was about to enter his home. They asked him to open his backpack and one of them took out a gun.
If you own a gun, you can face high fines
The incident also took place in the current prohibited area, as it not only includes Reumannplatz itself, but extends from the main station via Laxenburger Straße – Schröttergasse – Bürgergasse – Reumannplatz and Herndlgasse to Gudrunstraße and from there via Sonnwendgasse back to the central station. Dozens of blocks have been affected. About 40 signs provide information about the measures.
The ban is temporarily limited
Those who do not adhere to the rules risk severe penalties. Anyone caught with a prohibited weapon must pay a fine of up to 1,000 euros. For repeat offenders, the amount can rise to a maximum of 4,600 euros. The ban is initially limited to June 30, 2024.
