Ten students and three teachers from the German city of Heilbronn marched to their deaths while climbing Krippenstein during a heavy snowstorm 70 years ago. A now 91-year-old man from Obertraun was involved in the search that lasted a week.
Before Easter 1954, students aged 14 to 16 and their teachers from a boys’ secondary school in the German city of Heilbronn were looking forward to a varied and somewhat adventurous Holy Week in Obertraun in the Salzkammergut at the foot of the Dachstein Mountains. The group was billeted at the Obertraun Federal Sports School. But 13 of them marched into the “white death” on Maundy Thursday during a tour of Krippenstein after the outbreak of a snowstorm.
